Domestic abuse, sometimes referred to as domestic violence,  can happen to anyone and it is thought as many as one in four people will experience some form of domestic abuse in their life.  Domestic abuse includes physical, emotional and sexual abuse in couple relationships or between family  members.  The Government recently changed the legal definition of domestic abuse to include coercive control.

If you are experiencing domestic abuse it is important to tell someone.  Help and support is available via doctors, health visitors, midwives and organisations like Women’s Aid and the Men’s Advice Line. In an emergency call 999.

Women’s Aid provides an online Survivors Handbook which has lots of practical support and information for women experiencing domestic abuse. It includes information for women from black and ethnic minority communities, women with disabilities, lesbian and bisexual women. There is information about how to help children living with domestic abuse and much more besides.

More information about local support services, recovery programmes and support with legal processes can be found on the Worcestershire County Council website.
